ADDRESSING AN ISSUE

OF GLOBAL PROPORTIONS

Plastics have helped improve living standards, hygiene and nutrition around the world, especially in developing countries. Rapid increases in incomes and prosperity have brought many of the conveniences of modern life. But used plastics have become a global environmental challenge.

Scientists at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research surveyed 57 river systems around the world.
Just ten rivers transport more than 90% of river-based plastics to the ocean.
The rivers all have two common traits: [1] a generally high population living in the surrounding region, in some cases hundreds of millions, and [2] a lack of adequate waste management systems and infrastructure.

OUR MISSION

ELIMINATE PLASTIC WASTE

IN OUR ENVIRONMENT

Plastics provide many critical sanitary, safety, health preservation and convenience benefits. Even as we work aggressively to reduce plastic waste in the environment, we must maintain the critical benefits that plastics bring to people and communities around the world. With a thoughtful, comprehensive and strategic approach, we can do both.

Antoine Frérot,
CEO of Veolia

“Addressing plastic waste in the environment requires the participation and long term commitment of all aspects of society, including consumers, manufacturers, technology developers, the finance community, government and civil society. No one country, company or community can solve this on their own.”

Joining forces with governments at the national, regional and municipal level and organizations of civil society, we’re bringing new ideas and ways of thinking to the table.

OUR COMMITMENT

$1.5 Billion

over the next five years

We're starting with $1.5 billion over the next five years – and we welcome all companies, big or small, from all regions and sectors to support this effort.

WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER,
