Center for Regenerative Design and Collaboration

We are helping the Center for Regenerative Design and Collaboration (CRDC Global) scale up their production plant for RESIN8 in Costa Rica and expand their footprint in North America. RESIN8 is a concrete additive made from hard-to-recycle plastic which has already been used by Habitat for Humanity to build housing in Latin America.

Overview

CRDC aims to end plastic waste through regenerative design. With our support, CRDC plans to turn hard-to-recycle plastic into a concrete additive called RESIN8, to reclaim the value of plastic waste.

Plastic Waste Diversion Target

24,000 tons per year by mid-2022

Turning hard-to-recycle plastic into concrete products

CRDC’s innovative technology means their facilities are able to accept hard-to-recycle plastic, including plastics like PVC, polypropylene, and polystyrene, and turn it into their patented product, RESIN8. RESIN8 is a concrete additive that is suitable for structural and non-structural concrete, and can be used in numerous applications, including concrete blocks and pavers, pre-cast concrete, and poured-in-place concrete. Depending on the application, concrete made with RESIN8 can be up to 15% lighter and stronger, with better insulation properties than traditional concrete.

With support from the Alliance, CRDC will establish a 14,000 square foot facility in York, Pennsylvania, as well as scale up its existing production plant in Costa Rica, from small-scale commercial production to full-scale commercial production of 90 tons per day when fully operational in 2022. The two facilities will be able to process up to 24,000 metric tons of plastic waste per year combined—waste that would otherwise be sent to landfill or incinerated.

“CRDC Global is proud to partner with the Alliance to End Plastic Waste to put circularity to work by scaling up the production of RESIN8, a product that has the potential to have a positive impact on both the plastics and the construction industries.”
