From purpose to impact
Solving the plastic waste problem requires coordinated action across the value chain, over the life cycle of plastic products. Bold changes are needed to address mismanaged waste, posing systemic shifts that no one actor can achieve alone. Forging and strengthening partnerships among stakeholders allows us to unlock capital and accelerate impactful solutions at scale.
Our approach
Three key drivers enable our mission and allow us to deliver tangible results
-
Developing, deploying, and scaling solutions
-
Engaging communities
-
Catalysing investments
Developing, deploying, and scaling solutions
Within the Alliance’s ecosystem of members and partners resides the knowledge, resources and experience that allow the best ideas to be developed and deployed at scale around the world. We tap on this for funding and expertise to drive the development of new initiatives and reduce risk.
From idea to implementation
To address the global plastic waste challenge, we are investing in scalable, replicable, and economically viable projects.

Priorities are set based on assessments of the Alliance’s portfolio and available budget, providing guidance on what to look for in new projects. Projects are identified from various sources with past experience informing the screening process.
Project proposals are assessed by the Alliance’s technical, regional, and commercial teams for strategic fit, impact on our mission, suitability for implementation, and potential risks. For projects at an earlier stage of development, feasibility studies may be conducted.
Projects undergo final commercial evaluation with due diligence checks on stakeholders, financial modelling, and budget assessment, leading to approval for funding.
The project’s scope, deliverables, and milestones are documented in a funding agreement that is ultimately signed with relevant partners, setting the stage for implementation to start.
As project implementation takes off, the Alliance’s projects team works closely with partners to provide guidance and troubleshooting support. Progress is monitored against milestones, ensuring the delivery of project targets in line with the Alliance’s reporting metrics.
As each project draws to a close, learnings are captured and shared for use in the next generation of projects. The Alliance documents solution models for projects with strong potential, sharing them for replication or scaling by others.
Engaging communities
For the impact of solutions to end plastic waste to be maximised, communities need to embrace them. We provide both the education and resources to help secure the necessary buy-in and behavioural changes. We also create platforms that engage the community in cleanup and recycling initiatives.

Catalysing investments
The best ideas need financing to take shape, and be scaled and replicated. We aim to catalyse investments from a wide network of investors, including Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), the private sector, and philanthropic organisations, to allow for a pipeline of solutions to end plastic waste to be built.
