Our Impact and How We Measure It

Anchored by our Impact Metrics Framework, learn about the key impact areas aligned to our mission, and how we measure our progress in these areas from the work that we do – all to provide a full and accurate representation of our impact.

Advancing circularity hinges on the collaboration of governments, businesses, civil society, financial institutions, academia, and communities, both globally and locally.  We convene stakeholders in the plastic circularity ecosystem through trusted engagement and dialogue. This allows us to scale the benefits of our work across value chains, partners and local communities.

The Alliance exists to develop and demonstrate projects that help end plastic waste in the environment and advance towards plastics circularity. To effect change requires nurturing individual projects and programmes while creating enabling conditions for future replication – and even this requires ongoing trusted engagement and data-driven dialogue across various stakeholder groups to catalyse greater movement towards our mission.

Ensuring that we have robust processes to measure and independently verify our work is integral to providing an accurate view of our progress and to inform such dialogue. That is why we are on a journey to strengthen our reporting so we can share our experience and results based on transparent and independently assured metrics. We are raising the bar.

Our Impact Metrics Framework provides a consistent approach through which we can quantify, track, and report our progress. The framework outlines a suite of top-level metrics across five core and two associated impact areas most relevant to the work that we do.

For the purposes of reporting our 2023 impact, we voluntarily sought external Limited Assurance for those metrics prioritised as ‘assurance-ready’ as well as an assessment of reasonableness in approach for those that we will continue to develop. Against the backdrop of the varied projects and solutions that we are testing and implementing, and challenging environments and systems, we are committed to the path of continuous improvement so we can present a full set of independently assured results in future reporting years.

ALLIANCE IMPACT METRIC FRAMEWORK

Our impact reporting framework comprises five Core Topics that are most related to the core mission of the Alliance and hence the primary drivers for project selection and progression; and two Associated Topics that do not directly influence project selection yet remain important to measure the reflect the full impact of our work.

The first core topic is Developing Solution Models, representing our mission to create solutions toward a circular economy for plastic and help end plastic waste entering the environment.

We do so by Enabling the Ecosystem, to tap on collective knowledge and bring about replication of effective solutions, as well as Mobilising Capital in both the private and public sector, to meet the scale of the problem.

Reducing Unmanaged Waste and Capturing Value from Waste measure the effectiveness of our solutions, and how viable they are in the long run.

The associated topics are Creating Social Benefit and Mitigating Climate Impact are significant global issues. These are currently under development with the intention to report assured results in future Progress Reports.
